Inflammation and Mood Swings
Why This Isn’t Your Typical Weight Loss Conversation
If you’ve been here for a bit, you already know this…over here we are not micromanaging food, labeling your body as a problem or pretending willpower is the missing piece. That approach is exactly why so many women over 40 feel stuck.
I’m Nikki T, weight loss mindset coach, behavioral coach and someone who has spent decades helping women understand their bodies on a deeper level. I started as a personal trainer back in 2002, and like most in the industry, I taught dieting, control, and food rules…because that’s what we were taught.
But the truth is it’s clutter.
When you actually understand your body...physiologically and psychologically...you don’t need all the noise. You don’t need to fight yourself.
The Real Problem: We’ve Lost Touch With Our Body
Women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond didn’t grow up learning how to understand their bodies...we grew up learning how to control them.
Diet culture, family patterns, life experiences, and even small comments from years ago all shape how you operate today. Layer that with stress, hormonal changes and emotional patterns, and it becomes what I call a “tornado cocktail.”
And when you’re trying to lose weight on top of that? It feels impossible.
My Turning Point (And Why Mindset Matters First)
I remember standing in my kitchen after weighing and logging every bite of food, thinking…
“There has GOT to be a better way.”
Because I could not imagine living the next 40–50 years obsessing over food.
That moment is where my mindset method was born.
It’s not about the number on the scale.
You don’t actually want 120 or 130 pounds...you want what you think that number will give you:
- Confidence
- Ease in your body
- Feeling like yourself again
And that doesn’t come after weight loss.
It starts before it.
If your brain doesn’t catch up, you’ll self-sabotage...even if you lose the weight.
Inflammation and Mood Swings: The Missing Link
Let’s get into what most people are not talking about.
The mainstream conversation around inflammation sounds like:
- Cut sugar
- Avoid processed foods
- Drink more water
Sure, those things can help...but they are not the full picture. Not even close.
Inflammation is not just a food response.
It’s an emotional and neurological response.
Your body becomes inflamed when it perceives a threat.
And that threat can come from:
- What you eat
- How you think
- How you live
- How you relate to yourself
Mood Swings Are a Signal...Not a Flaw
If you’ve been feeling:
- Irritable
- Reactive
- Emotional
- Easily overwhelmed
You might assume it’s just hormones, aging, or something you ate.
But what if your mood swings are actually your body signaling inflammation?
When your body is in a low-grade inflammatory state:
- Your nervous system becomes more sensitive
- Your tolerance window shrinks
- Small things feel overwhelming
This isn’t because you’re “too emotional.”
It’s because your system is already operating under stress.
How Inflammation Impacts Weight Loss
Your body has one job: protect you.
If it feels unsafe it will:
- Hold onto weight
- Slow down non-essential processes
- Increase cravings for quick energy
Because it’s choosing survival over thriving.
Think about it on a primitive level...if your body thinks you’re in danger, it’s not focused on fat loss. It’s focused on keeping you alive.
The Cycle That Keeps You Stuck
Here’s what happens for most women:
- You feel off or reactive
- You judge yourself for it
- That judgment creates more stress
- Inflammation stays elevated
- Weight stays stuck
And then you try to fix it with more control.
But control often makes it worse.
Because more pressure = more stress
And more stress = more inflammation
A Better Question to Ask Yourself
Instead of asking:
“What should I cut out?”
Start asking:
- Where does my body feel like it has to stay on guard?
- Where do I feel unsafe?
Because inflammation is often the result of:
- Constant overthinking
- Suppressing emotions
- Feeling like you always have to “handle it”
- Living in a state of pressure and control
Your body isn’t just reacting to food.
It’s reacting to your life.
Mood Swings Are Your First Clue
Your emotional shifts happen faster than physical ones.
You can feel overwhelmed in seconds...but fat loss takes time.
So instead of trying to “fix” mood swings, start following them.
They are clues.
They show you:
- Where your system is overloaded
- Where stress is building
- Where your body is asking for something different
How to Start Reducing Inflammation (Without More Control)
Start simple.
Notice what spikes you emotionally:
- Rushing and feeling behind
- Holding back what you want to say
- Replaying conversations in your head
- Constant “should” thinking
These micro-moments add up. And your body keeps score.
Reducing inflammation isn’t just about what you remove.
It’s about what you resolve.
- The thoughts you complete
- The emotions you process
- The pressure you release
Because unresolved internal tension?
That is inflammation.
What Happens When You Shift This
When you start addressing the real root:
- Your mood stabilizes
- Your reactions soften
- Your body feels lighter
- Weight loss feels easier
Not because you’re trying harder…
But because your body no longer feels like it has to fight.
Final Thought: Your Body Isn’t Working Against You
If this resonated, here’s what I want you to take with you:
Your body is not broken.
It’s responding.
And when you learn how to work with it instead of constantly trying to fix it, everything changes.
